Impact skills for early career researchers

University of Bath issued a competitive three-year tender for external provision of skills coaching and training for researchers across the institution. This included the delivery of activities that equipped early career researchers with the knowledge and practical tools to engage external audiences in their research more effectively and pursue impact.

Our approach

  • Issued pre-activity questionnaires to ensure the focus of activities reflected participants’ diverse research interests.

  • Small-group work was interactive, allowing researchers to collaborate and begin developing their own impact plans.

  • Provided case studies and practical guidance on how to begin engaging with the policy process and communicating their research.

Our impact

  • Cohorts of upskilled early career researchers ready to take the next steps in engaging stakeholders in their work.

  • Raising the profile of impact as an important component of the University’s researcher development programme.

“My mind was blown learning about where to find relevant routes to policy impact, how to write policy documents, and thinking about how my research could be framed in different ways for different audiences.”
