Increasing impact across a university
University of Hertfordshire
Universities often turn to external impact specialists for support in a very specific area. Seeking deeper, sustained collaboration, University of Hertfordshire commissioned a flexible programme of multi-faceted support for its researchers across the impact cycle, from planning to external engagement and relationship building, to evidencing impact and case study development for REF 2021. This allowed us to co-design project objectives, adapt our approaches as priorities evolved and target support at those who needed it most, when they needed it.
Our approach
Collaborated closely with senior leaders, managers and research support teams to identify where practical support was best directed for the greatest benefit.
Created impact development plans to help focus researchers’ activities, time and energy, and support institutional REF 2021 impact planning.
Worked across different research support teams to ensure projects were benefitting from the full range of institutional expertise.
Advised researchers on engagement strategies and, where needed, provided hands-on support to engage stakeholders and target audiences.
Delivered impact skills training across disciplines.
Built relationships with the University's research users, stakeholders, partners and beneficiaries to evidence impact in key priority areas.
Via interviews and analysis of policy, legislative, industry and media reports, identified significant impact that had gone undiscovered.
Co-authored multiple REF 2021 impact case studies.
Our impact
A key contribution to an outstanding set of REF 2021 impact results for UH researchers and the central impact team. UH climbed 61 places from REF 2014 to 32nd in the impact rankings, the highest rise of any university and making it the leading post-1992 institution for impact (source: Times Higher).
One-to-one collaborative support enabled researchers to further develop their impact literacy, share learning with colleagues and protect their time.
Relationships with external partners and research beneficiaries were deepened and broadened.
Foundations were laid for transformative impact funding successes, including sucessful bids for ESRC and AHRC Impact Acceleration Accounts.
